Bk tidal wave dead10/19/2023 ![]() ![]() In the 1840s, entrepreneurs began to build ports as the "offloading end" of the Erie Canal. Industrial era Brooklyn Heights and Red Hook circa 1875 So great was their hurry, that they would not stay to return our salute, though it was given with much cordiality and warmth which they seemed very sensible of, notwithstanding their distance, which was nearly two miles.Īlmost the entire New York metropolitan area was under British military occupation from the end of 1776 until November 23, 1783, when they evacuated the city. By deserters we learn that they sustained considerable damage, being hulled in many places, and very much hurt in their rigging. On Friday, two ships and three tenders, taking advantage of a brisk gale and strong current, ran by our batteries, up the North River where they at present remain. General Howe has arrived with the army from Halifax, which is encamped on Staten Island. Samuel Shaw wrote to his parents on July 15: It appeared that gunfire from Fort Defiance did damage to the British ships. They stayed there for over a month, beating off harassing attacks, and finally returned to Staten Island on August 18. On July 12, the British frigates Rose and Phoenix and the schooner Tyrol ran the gauntlet past Defiance and the stronger Governor's Island works without firing a shot, and got all the way to Tappan Zee. On July 5, General Nathanael Greene called it "a post of vast importance" and, three days later, Col. In May, George Washington described it as "small but exceedingly strong". The cannons were to be fired over the tops of the fort's walls. On April 10, one thousand Continentals took possession of both points and began constructing Fort Defiance which mounted one three pounder cannon and four eighteen pounders. Among the works initiated were forts on Governor's Island and Red Hook, facing the bay. General Israel Putnam came to New York on April 4, 1776, to assess the state of its defenses and strengthen them. Maps from Sproule and Bernard Ratzer show that Red Hook was a low-lying area full of tidal mill ponds created by the Dutch. The two principal earthworks were about 150 feet (46 m) by 175 feet (53 m), and the tertiary one was about 75 feet (23 m) by 100 feet (30 m). The three redoubts covered an area about 400 feet (120 m) by 800 feet (240 m). The entire earthwork was about 1,600 feet (490 m) long and covered the entire island. The Sproule map shows that the Fort Defiance complex consisted of three redoubts on a small island connected by trenches, with an earthwork on the island's south side to defend against a landing. It is shown on a map called "a Map of the Environs of Brooklyn" drawn in 1780 by Loyalist engineer George S. American Revolution ĭuring the Battle of Brooklyn (also known as the Battle of Long Island), Fort Defiance was constructed on the hoek. Rapelye Street in Red Hook is named for Rapelje and his descendants, who lived in Brooklyn for centuries. ![]() A couple of decades after the birth of his daughter Sarah, Joris Jansen Rapelje removed to Brooklyn, where he was one of the Council of twelve men, and where he was soon joined by son-in-law Hans Hansen Bergen. She was born near Wallabout Bay, which later became the site of the New York (Brooklyn) Naval Shipyard. Rapelye Street in Red Hook commemorates the beginnings of one of New Amsterdam's earliest families, the Rapelje clan, descended from the first European child born in the new Dutch settlement in the New World, Sarah Rapelje. In 1657, Roode Hoek became part of the Town of Brooklyn. : 4 The actual hoek of Red Hook was a point on an island that stuck out into Upper New York Bay at today's Dikeman Street west of Ferris Street. In Dutch, Hoek means "point" or "corner," and not the English hook ( i.e., something curved or bent). The village was settled by Dutch colonists of New Amsterdam in 1636, and named Roode Hoek, after the red clay soil and the point of land projecting into the Upper New York Bay. The native Lenape referred to the region as Ihepetonga, meaning a high point of sandy soil. History Colonization Holland-style factory building in Red Hook Politically, Red Hook is represented by the New York City Council's 38th District. It is patrolled by the 76th Precinct of the New York City Police Department. Red Hook is part of Brooklyn Community District 6, and its primary ZIP Code is 11231. Today it is home to the Red Hook Houses, the largest housing project in Brooklyn. A prosperous shipping and port area in the early 20th century, the area declined in the latter part of the century. It is located on a peninsula projecting into the Upper New York Bay and is bounded by the Gowanus Expressway and the Carroll Gardens neighborhood on the northeast, Gowanus Canal on the east, and the Upper New York Bay on the west and south. Red Hook is a neighborhood in western Brooklyn, New York City, New York, within the area once known as South Brooklyn. ![]()

Acorn stairlifts job10/18/2023 ![]() ![]() This heralded a run of success which saw them win the First Competition championship in 1899–1900 after having been runners-up the two preceding years. The final match of the competition took place at Mytholmroyd on 3 April 1897, and despite a bitterly cold day there was a gate of 2,000 of which over half had travelled from Keighley. The sweet taste of success came Keighley's way in 1896–97 when they won the Second Competition championship. The following season the club did badly and finished tenth, but in 1895–96, the side came into its own again and finished fourth. Blue bell ice cream flavors 202010/18/2023 ![]() ![]() You'll also sometimes find that it contains so much fudge that it overpowers everything else and becomes a slog to eat. Occasionally, the pieces of cones are so hard that they're difficult to chew. Some batches of this ice cream are downright dreadful. However, before you celebrate, you should know that Cookies 'n Cream Cone is still a work in progress. It won't take long for you to be convinced that you've found one of your favorite flavors of Blue Bell ice cream. Beyond the cookie crumbles, you'll discover swirls of fudge along with pieces of chocolate ice cream cones that have been blessed with an additional layer of dark chocolate. It's like regular cookies and cream ice cream with some extra goodies added in to put an even bigger grin on your face. If you get a good batch of this stuff, it's an awesome experience. Even if this is the last ice cream flavor in the freezer at your local grocery store, you shouldn't even consider buying it. But instead of being an effective distraction, that extra amount of sweetness makes everything about this flavor even more off-putting. ![]() To camouflage the lack of creaminess, Blue Bell has attempted to distract your taste buds by adding extra sugar. The second problem is the overbearing sweetness of this flavor. In place of the creaminess, you'll find ice cream that is so icy that you practically need to chew it. By removing the fat, Blue Bell removed most of the creamy goodness that makes all their other ice cream options so memorable. The first problem with Light Homemade Vanilla is the texture. Who cares if the ice cream is technically healthier for you if it's inedible? While that's true, all it will take is one spoonful for you to agree that the tradeoff isn't worth it. On the Light Homemade Vanilla container, Blue Bell tries to convince you to buy this ice cream by claiming it has less fat and fewer calories than typical ice cream. While you may be able to find flavors of Blue Bell ice cream that aren't on the list, we've made sure to include all of the most popular flavors in this ranking. For this list, we've separated the cream of the crop from the brand's most forgettable flavors and ranked all the flavors in order from worst to first. While there are many flavors of Blue Bell ice cream, not all of them are top-notch. That just goes to show how loyal and how obsessed Blue Bell fanatics are when it comes to this ice cream. Despite being available in less than half of the states in the country and despite a 2015 listeria outbreak that forced the company to temporarily close their factories, Blue Bell is now the third highest-selling brand of ice cream in America, per Statista. Nowadays, you can find their products in 23 states, although it's still mostly found in the South. It wasn't until 1989 that Blue Bell ice cream was sold outside of the state of Texas (via Reference for Business). Slowly but surely, the popularity of this brand grew. The story of Blue Bell Creamery began in 1907 in Brenham, Texas. ![]()

T mobile 4 lines 100.0010/18/2023 ![]() Unlike other carriers, you're not really 'saving' with Mint's family plan, rather cutting some red tape and getting access to an easier to manage setup versus buying multiple plans. Mint has also recently introduced a family plan of its own recently, which will automatically enable you to bundle multiple lines together at the cheapest rate possible. This can mean a relatively hefty sum to pay upfront, but there's also the distinct advantage of no monthly bills or contracts to deal with. With Mint, you get the choice between three month, six month, and yearly plans that you can buy outright, with the longer service durations equating to lower monthly rates on average. Mint Mobile is an absolutely awesome prepaid carrier if you're looking to maximise value and don't mind paying for a plan upfront. See our Visible wireless plans guide for a detailed breakdown of this service. This tier is significantly more expensive but comes with 50GB of priority data on the Verizon Wideband 5G network, which means it gets the fastest possible speeds without suffering from any slow-down if the local area is network. If you're a more data-hungry user, you could also consider the premium Visible Plus for $40 per month per line. A slight caveat here is that there's no bespoke family plan at Visible, so you'll have to manage those lines separately. Previously, you had to bundle in four lines on a plan to get the cheapest rate possible whereas now you'll automatically pay just $25 per month on the standard plan. While the standard Visible plan is potentially subject to deprioritization (as with most prepaid plans), it's overall a solid pick that's now great value for a varied range of setups. While the carrier used to specifically have a 'Party Pay' family plan feature that's unfortunately no longer available, a recent price cut (from $30 to $25 per month) has essentially ensured all lines are automatically enrolled on the lowest price anyway.Īnd, for just $25 per month, the standard (or basic) Visible plan is fantastic considering you get completely unlimited data, mobile hotspotting (at 5MBps), and unlimited talk and text. Visible has been a staple on our list of best family plans since the inception of this guide, simply because it's exceptional value if you need an unlimited data plan on a budget. For more options, we also recommend checking out our main best cell phone plans article, where you'll find a great overview of the market as a whole. If you need any help, guidance, or unbiased advice, you'll find a very helpful frequently asked questions section at the bottom of the page. Visible and Mint Mobile are especially great options right now for those who are really on a budget and willing to cut out some of the perks and priority data that you'd normally find on the more expensive post-paid options.Īnd, we're not just weighing in with a simple list of the best family cell phone plans in this article either. Not only do you have some very competitive discounts on multi-line premium unlimited data plans from the traditional 'big three' carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile), but you've also for some great options from smaller prepaid carriers. Now more than ever you'll also find the market absolutely flooded with fantastic options for the best family cell phone plans.
